Kootenai County Jail Overview
The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office Jail Bureau operates Kootenai County Jail as the county's main adult detention facility. The jail handles people booked after local arrests, court arrests, warrant arrests, probation or parole holds, sentenced county-jail commitments, and holds for other agencies. The public current inmate report has also shown US Marshal hold entries, which means a person can be physically housed at Kootenai County Jail while a federal agency has a custody interest.
The Jail Bureau page describes broad custody duties: care and custody of incarcerated persons, meals, housing assignments, medication distribution, prisoner transport, incoming and outgoing mail, and random prisoner or housing-area searches. Detention staff also support commissary, the Work Release Program, the Sheriff's Labor Program, inmate labor, programs, and chaplain services. Idaho law gives the sheriff charge of the county jail and requires persons committed by lawful authority to be received and cared for.
The official Jail Bureau screenshot from KCSO's jail page shows the local contact block, lobby hours, and program links used for adult jail business.
That page is the best starting point for the facility itself, while the in-custody report is the starting point for the adult roster.
Kootenai County Jail Capacity
Kootenai County's own jail dashboard gives the strongest capacity record for this facility. The county lists a legal maximum capacity of 361, a physical maximum capacity of 451, and 507 total inmates overall as of April 2026. The same county page says the jail failed its last inspection for overcrowding only. The Idaho Sheriffs' Association directory separately lists Kootenai County Jail rated capacity as 451 and average daily population as 416.
The distinction matters. Legal maximum capacity is the approved jail limit, while physical maximum capacity reflects available beds. Average daily population, often shortened to ADP, is a daily average rather than a one-day count. Using the April 2026 county count, the jail was above both legal and physical capacity. The county dashboard also notes that the population fell during COVID-19 and then surged again, with funding allocated to build out two remaining jail pods.
The county capacity dashboard is shown on the official Kootenai County JAIL page.
Use the dashboard for jail-size and crowding context, and use the roster report for a named person's current custody status.
Kootenai County Jail Roster Lookup
The adult jail lookup is not a modern search form in the public view captured during research. KCSO publishes an In-Custody Report hub that links to the Current Inmate List PDF. The PDF title is "Kootenai County Jail - Current Inmate List With Pending Bonds." It displays a "Current as of" timestamp, and it was observed with June 8, 2026 timestamps during research, but KCSO did not publish a guaranteed refresh interval.
- Open the KCSO In-Custody Report page and choose the Current Inmate List PDF.
- Check the "Current as of" timestamp before relying on custody or bond information.
- Use browser or PDF find to search the last name. The inspected report was alphabetized by last name.
- Read every arrest block under the person's name, because one person can have more than one offense line or hold.
- Use arrest type, arresting agency, related case, and remaining bond due to decide whether jail, court, IDOC, federal, or records channels should be checked next.
| Roster field | How to read it |
|---|---|
| Inmate name | Shown in the PDF as last name, first name, and middle name. |
| Incarceration date | Date and time the person entered Kootenai County Jail custody. |
| Arrest type | Custody arrest, warrant arrest, court arrest, or hold for another agency. |
| Arresting agency | May show KCSO, city police, Idaho State Police, court, probation and parole, tribal police, or US Marshal. |
| Related case | Can help bridge from jail custody data to iCourt or clerk records. |
| Remaining bond due | A dollar value, zero, or blank. The PDF warns zero or blank can mean sentenced or not bondable. |
If the person is not found, call the jail, check the Daily Press Log, search IDOC Resident/Client Search for state custody or supervision, use BOP for federal sentenced custody, and use ICE ODLS for immigration custody. Idaho VINELink is also linked by KCSO for custody and court event notifications. A current roster entry is a custody snapshot, not the full court docket.

The sheriff's public records materials route jail records, incarceration dates, booking photos, and other jail-related records through KCSO rather than the general county records form.

Kootenai County Jail Mail Money
KCSO publishes detailed inmate mail rules and trust account rules. Mail must include the inmate's full name, the jail care-of line, the Government Way and P.O. Polaroids are banned, and personal books mailed in are no longer accepted after October 31, 2025.

The mail page documents the address and screening rules.
The money page documents JailATM, CTEL, the kiosk, and the helplines used for adult jail accounts.
Kootenai County Jail Bonds
Bond information on the roster should be read with care. The current inmate PDF can show more than one offense line, more than one related case, and more than one remaining bond amount. KCSO warns that a zero or blank amount may mean the inmate is sentenced or not bondable on that offense. Paying one listed bond may not clear another case, a probation or parole hold, an other-agency hold, a US Marshal hold, or a later court order.
The KCSO bond page lists bonding company, Point and Pay, JailATM or inmate trust funds, and cash or property bond through the Clerk of Court during regular business hours. A $15 sheriff's bond fee applies per case number when paying cash bond, Point and Pay, or JailATM. It is not required when bonding through court. For court-filed charges, hearing dates, or changed release terms, use Idaho iCourt or the Kootenai County District Court clerk.
For booking photos, incarceration dates, or jail records not published in the PDF, use the KCSO JustFOIA public records portal or the printable KCSO public records form. The sheriff's forms page identifies jail record requests as covering incarceration dates, booking photos, and other jail-related records. Idaho law requires booking photographs and fingerprints during county jail booking, but the adult public PDF inspected during research did not show mugshots or clickable profile photos.
Kootenai County Jail Programs
Kootenai County Jail offers or supports programs that matter for custody planning. The Work Release Program is for eligible low-risk offenders employed in Kootenai County. The Sheriff's Community Labor Program serves court-ordered labor in lieu of jail time and has its own check-in point at the jail. The jail also references inmate labor, programs, chaplain services, counseling, and rehabilitation resources.
The jail is on North Government Way in Coeur d'Alene, north of the county courthouse complex and near the fairgrounds area. For the Sheriff's Community Labor Program, the glass doors are south of the main jail lobby, toward the fairgrounds parking lot. Research did not locate official turn-by-turn highway directions, public transit instructions, parking rates, or ADA entrance details. Call 208-446-1400 before arrival when the purpose is time-sensitive or access-specific.
Note: Do not travel for a social visit. Kootenai County Jail uses online social visitation, with attorney and law enforcement exceptions.
